OUR STORY

Our story began in 1909 with wooden barrels, block ice, and a two-day steam to Baltimore. More than a century later, our methods have evolved, but our values haven’t.

Today, Cowart Seafood is the second-largest oyster producer on the East Coast. We are one of only a few U.S. oyster companies that control every stage of production, from oyster hatchery to final frozen and shucked products.

We process over 30 million oysters each year on the same Chesapeake Bay grounds our family started 135 years ago.

We process over 30 million oysters each year on the same Chesapeake Bay grounds our family started 135 years ago.

Every oyster we raise is Crassostrea virginica, native to the Chesapeake Bay and found along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. We harvest from private, shared, and public beds across the Bay’s tributary rivers: the Rappahannock, James, York, and Potomac.

Every product we deliver meets the highest standards of safety and consistency. Our facilities are certified by the Virginia Department of Health, FDA, and BRC, and are fully allergen-free. Beyond state and federal requirements, we conduct internal audits to ensure each oyster that leaves our hands is as safe and pure as the waters it came from.
